So if you’ve read all about Pages and Posts, you’re ready to go. The only thing you really need to know is that you have to go to http://www.saintjosephs.co.uk/wp-admin. Once you get there you’ll get a bunch of stuff! This looks different and is clearly no longer “the website” any more. But it is really – it’s just the “administrative” side of things.
Writing Posts and Pages are very very similar. In both you need to use the “Write” tab on the screen:
(you may not have the “Manage” item at all, depending on what you’re allowed to do on the website. Just look for the Write one and check it’s lit up in Orange.)
Here it’s showing that you’re in the Write tab and then the Post screen. If you click on Page you get, surprise surprise, the Page screen.
Both are very similar and the simple thing to do is to type into the box! No magic is needed and you get the usual kind of controls for bold, italics, bullets, and so on.
When you’re writing a Page, remember to go down a bit and change the “Page Parent” to the right level – see the help about Posts and Pages for more on this but here’s what it looks like:
Just choose the level you want the Page to be at.
When you’re ready, click “Publish” on the right-hand side of the screen. If you press “Save” then it won’t appear on the website but will not be lost if you close your browser or shutdown your machine. In fact the software automatically saves what you type at regular intervals and does all the right kinds of things in getting you back to what you were doing.
Posts are really easy too. Make sure you’re on the Post section (not the Page section) and type in the same way. Here the only thing to remember is to add the right Tags. You put these in just by typing them in. If what you type is one the website already knows about, then after a few characters it’ll suggest it. If you put to specify more than one tag, just put them in with a comma between each. So we have:
for a Post that’s related to the Website and Events (if that’s sensible in some way!).
The rest is starting to get clever, but actually it’s really easy. Adding pictures is just a question of clicking on the right box in “Add media” and then selecting the files to upload, then pressing “Insert into Post”. And so on. I’ll try to go into this in a bit more detail later but hope the above is enough to get you going. If not then put up a comment on the website! (This should get to be a habit – don’t email or wait until you see somebody – click to comment!)
Again don’t forget to press “Publish” when you’ve finished doing your Post!
